Today’s Biggest Challenge

By: Danielle W. Carter

All eyes were on CEO of Lyric Financial, Eli Ball as he spoke at the Billboard Film, TV and Music Conference 2013.  The panel was titled, “What’s Happening to Investment In Music for Other Media?”

“Five percent of the industry is making 95% of the money.”

Specialty financial companies like Lyric Financial are developing programs to meet the income needs for the 95%.

One of these product solutions includes royalty advances for music professionals and labels.  Lyric explains, “[A royalty advance] is a cash advance on a royalty earning pipeline that has not yet been paid.  You can draw cash immediately for royalties that have not yet been paid by ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, your publisher, or your label. This type of funding is available to all songwriters, producers, and publishers who will earn at least $5,000 in royalties during the next year.”

With the growth of financial companies, staffed by former music executives who understand the sporadic revenue streams of entertainment professionals, there is an opportunity to leverage music catalogs and other assets, thereby implementing more creative financing options.

Lyric Financial posted an interview with Business Manager Johnathan Schwartz who said, “I think the biggest challenge is that today’s earning potential is not as great as a decade ago…artists today are generating more revenue from touring and other opportunities like sponsorship, endorsements, or taking equity positions in companies.  But those opportunities are really only available if you’re an A-list artist.”

Emerging artists, songwriters, and other music professionals continue to trail-blaze in the industry, standing behind music they believe in, which often means heavily investing in their craft and business upfront.  Once widely available, the practice of utilizing alternative funding options may become a favorable way going forward to sustain a career in the music industry.

Let us know your comments!  Would you consider using a financing program?  Do you think artists can continue to rely on crowd funding campaigns?

Random Night Out: VIP Tickets to Lianne La Havas (London’s Soulful Singer/Songwriter)

Pleasant surprise!  Random story about how I ended up in VIP at Lianne’s concert.  My friend’s cousin (who I met a couple days prior) texts me at 9PM.  He has an extra ticket to see London singer/songwriter Lianne La Havas.  The concert is going to start in 15 minutes!  I grab a quick dry kale salad…it was so dry!!…and jump into a cab downtown.  As I walk up the dimly light steps into the concert venue, I hear Lianne singing.  As I wait by the steps/entrance, a couple who is leaving asks if I want to take their VIP passes since they have to go.  Yes please!  My new friend and I head on up to VIP for some photo opps, then down to the ground level where the root of the crowd energy is already boiling.  What a fantastic and surprising night!  In the flow of life; some things you can’t plan.

Lianne La Havas was great live.  The tone of her voice was rich with a nice edge.  Great energy from the audience.  The stage setup was simple.  Acoustic set, good songs with strong lyrics and a powerful voice.  The entire concert hall was singing along.  It’s good to know that pure music from someone’s heart without all the gimics is still appreciated.  I am inspired by tonight’s show.  Can’t wait to write more songs for my project and with other talented artists.

Unconventional Inspiration

When’s the last time you heard or saw something that made you stop and think, “wow, that’s exceptional?”

It doesn’t happen as often as I’d like. Today, I’m a lucky gal! I got an email from Chris Guillebeau who has a blog as well. He talks about the “unconventional book tour” mapped out at arbitrary places throughout the country. After reading the article below, it hit me that: one, I’m a huge do it yourselfer and two, in reminded that anything is possible. It’s easy for me to think things have to be a certain way…just like on TV and the movies right? Maybe not! What’s something that’s taking you longer than you’d like to complete? Now, is there another way to go about it? Whatever alternative solution you come up with may be even more authentic and creative because it’s your spin on it!

Try it on a big or small decision this week and comment below to let me know how your experience was.

Locked Out Of Heaven Waiting For You

It’s 11:40AM on Sunday in Nigeria. I’m sitting in my room missing a special someone. Have you ever been apart from someone who makes you happy? Feeling like you’re “locked out of heaven” is a bitter sweet problem to have. If you care for someone enough to miss them when you’re apart, or if you’ve been in a long distance relationship, I wrote this song for you.

Imagine you are sitting still in a chair gazing out of a frosty window. Then press Frozen Memories to find out what happens…

This is an exclusive listen to “Frozen Memories,” a new song that I co-wrote with David Smith and Tiffany Parker. It will be released on iTunes this Tuesday! Please visit http://www.itunes.com to purchase this song performed by Tiffany Parker.

Tiffany, David Smith and I meet at a NARIP event. NARIP is a global music professionals organization. It’s been a great resource and has a network full of people who truly care about making heartfelt music to set the mood for your favorite TV shows, movies and radio stations.

It’s a good feeling to be able to give life to this story. So many of our troops’ families have lived this song repeatedly. It’s my hope that this song can bring them and you peace and hope. Please leave a comment. Have you lived in this distant romance before? How did you cope?
